The Humble Potato

Because I walked across one, I have a new appreciation for how big the potato fields are.
Also, I am amazed with how many potatoes are left after the harvest.

Gleaning Potatoes

When the call comes, we come running for potatoes. Eileen is an amazing "tato" finder as Margaret would call them. Margaret was the lucky one and got to sit on Grandpa's lap. Uncle Darrel and Emily came out for a bit too. Some neighbor dogs joined us at the end.
John was amazing. He followed Eileen and me out to the center of a pivot and then ran all the way back. It was a long, long way. We were tired and very dusty by the time we got home. But, happy to have a fun afternoon and 200 pounds of potatoes!

Doctrine and Covenants 88:106

"And again, another angel shall sound his trump, which is the seventh angel, saying: It is finished; it is finished! The Lamb of God hath overcome and trodden the wine-press alone, even the wine-press of the fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God."

On Saturday we spent our time canning grape juice while listening to Conference. There were excellent talks that were uplifting and transformative. Dad and Kelly picked all the grapes and then I joined in cutting off the stems and sorting. It was a good thing to sort through all the grapes because we found a lot of snails. Not to worry, the juice is boiled for an hour or longer. Nothing but the best is left. This juice is rich and gorgeous stuff.

Stairway to Heaven

This place is called "Stairway to Heaven." All I can think to comment on is to share the lyrics of Led Zeppelin. I will pass. Not my style.

City Creek

We took yet another trip up City Creek Trails. It is a lovely walk. After, we had a nice picnic and let the children play. It is quite different from last year. It seems to me the leaves went brown and fell off fast. Still its is my favorite place to walk.

Bee Trip

These are photos of John's first field trip. It was a fun outing. He learned about bees, ate bread and honey, helped press apples, and went on a buggy ride. Beautiful and cold.

The Reading Mother

This poem, for me, is an ideal that I hope to live up to. It shows an example of quality and quantity. We are not up to Marmion or Ivanhoe but, I hope to some day. This day we started with "My Car" by Byron Burton.

The Reading Mother
By Strickland Gillilan

I had a mother who read to me
Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea,
Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth,
"Blackbirds" stowed in the hold beneath.

I had a Mother who read me lays
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.

I had a Mother who read me tales
Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness blent with his final breath.

I had a Mother who read me the things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings--
Stories that stir with an upward touch,
Oh, that each mother of boys were such!

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be--
I had a Mother who read to me.

Owen

This darling baby was a crack up! Floppy, squishy, and a pleasure. Congratulations to David and Katie.
